Possibilities for the Use of LNG as a Fuel on the Baltic Sea

The environment still is exposed on degradation caused by industries activities. Fortunately for the environment, the international community (IMO, EU, HELCOM) agreed to reduce emissions of some pollutants. These requirements are being implemented gradually and will have full force in 2015 and 2016. On the other hand that situation is a big challenge for a shipping industry to meet these requirements, especially on ECA (emission control area). One option is to use LNG as a fuel. This paper describe the LNG situation on Baltic Sea, and aims of project “MarTech LNG” as well. “MarTech LNG” is one of projects, which support the LNG solutions for south Baltic Sea region.

LNG simulations secure both a safer and better LNG-business

The Biggest 1A1 LNG Powered Ferry Born in Klaipėda

The newest project coming from the Joint Venture Company of Lithuania and Norway, is delivery of a LNG-bunkering vessel for Swedish company, Viking Line. The vessel will be maintaining the LNG fuelled ferry Viking Grace – the biggest LNG powered ship at the moment. As the company was one of the first to offer the LNG powered bunker ships to the market, one of the main goals of the company is to become the leading company, able to create modern LNG powered ships intended for bunkering.

Implementation of Lithuanian LNG Terminal Project is Halfway There

In a few years, liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal should start operating in Klaipėda Seaport. Therefore, Lithuania will become one of the first countries in the region to build and exploit a terminal of such type. This project is important not only to Lithuania which seeks energetic independency, but also to surrounding countries – when gas service and gas storage infrastructure are applied, LNG can be served to Latvia and Estonia as well.

Klaipėda Seaport – LNG Gateway to the Baltic States

Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the most important and biggest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea, land and railway routes from East to West. 17 big stevedoring companies, ship repairing, and ship building yards operate within the port as well as all types of marine business and cargo handling services. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 45 million tons. The shortest distances connect the port to the most important industrial regions of the Eastern hinterland (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, etc.). The main shipping lines to the ports of Western Europe, South-East Asia and the continent of America pass through Klaipeda port. There are 28 specialised cargo terminals operate in the port. The greatest part of the port’s cargo consists of oil products, manure, ro-ro cargo, containers, and agricultural products, and LNG operations are planned for 2014.

Lithuanians Are Entering the LNG Shipping Market

Western Baltija Shipbuilding (WBS), the daughter company of Western Shipyard, which belongs to the biggest corporation in Estonia – BLRT Grupp, has set a goal – to be a brand for LNG vessels. The company, with deep traditions in Lithuania, located in Klaipėda Seaport, has become increasingly active in the “green shipping” sector; WBS has already built several LNG powered ships.

AGA Nynäshamn LNG Terminal is the first step towards LNG fuel in the Baltic Sea

AGA’s facility for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is located outside Nynäshamn, Sweden. The first of its kind in the Baltic Sea region, the terminal is AGA’s largest venture ever.

Fjord Line launches the world´s first and largest cruise ferry powered solely by LNG

Based on a decision to go all in on LNG, the Danish ship owners company, Fjord Line is setting new standards and developing new technologies in the field of cruise ferry sailing. Fjord Line´s two new ferries powered by LNG measure 170 meters equaling a total of 557,77 feet.
