Baleària has ordered two new LNG-powered ferries for 200 million euros

Baleària has reached an agreement with Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini to build two ferries with dual gas engines sister ferries, which will have a length of 186.5 meters and a capacity for 810 people, 2,180 linear meters of cargo and 150 cars. The total investment in these innovative vessels will be 200 million euros, and are expected to be operational by the end of 2018.

With the construction of these two new units, the company goes one step further in its commitment to the use of natural gas and eco-efficiency applied to the fleet. The ships can reach a speed of 24 knots thanks to two dual engines with a power of 20,600 KW. The use of liquefied natural gas and other clean energy will reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by more than 40% and eliminate emissions of sulfur. Both ferries, with identical characteristics, will have 123 cabins and 402 seats for passengers.

President of Baleària, Adolfo Utor, remarked that these two new ferries will enable the shipping company to "ensure better service to both passengers and logistics operators, while gain competitiveness". The two smartships will incorporate "the latest technologies to be more sustainable and ensure the best passenger travel experience," he concluded.

For its part, Cantiere Navale Visentini Srl declares that it is very satisfied with this order and for being able to build these boats on behalf of Baleària as a direct sale, which confirms the capacity of the shipyard with regard to the constant development of new and innovative projects in RO-PAX type boats, as well as being very competitive in terms of both price and reliability.

These new units are added to the cruise ferry that Baleària commissioned in early 2016 to Spanish shipyard Lanaval. This intelligent vessel, which will be the largest in operation in the Mediterranean and among the largest in the world, will incorporate services of a cruise to enhance the passengers' experience. An investment of 187 million euros is expected to start operating on the Balearic lines during 2019.

These three future ships and the current auxiliary engine running on natural gas ferry Abel Matutes (using this fuel in the maneuvers and stay in port), make Baleària one of the pioneering shipping companies in the use of liquefied natural gas in the world .
