KN to provide operational services to the floating LNG terminal in Germany

Oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals operator KN (Klaipėdos Nafta AB) was selected by German energy company Uniper to provide the operational services of the floating LNG terminal under construction in Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea coast.

The LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven, in the north of the land of Lower Saxony, Jade Gulf / North Sea, is the most advanced LNG terminal under construction by Uniper and the first floating LNG terminal project in Germany. The aim is to build the terminal in record time and have it operational and supplying natural gas to the country as early as this winter.

The solution for the terminal is based on the floating storage vessel (FSRU) technology, which will be supplied and operated by the Norwegian company Hoegh LNG for the project, as in Lithuania. The annual design capacity of the terminal is 7.5 billion cubic meter of natural gas, which corresponds to over 8% of Germany’s 2021 gas demand.

At the LNG terminal in Wilhemshaven KN was selected to provide operational services until preliminary date of March 31st, 2024, consisting of the establishment and operation of the gas metering system and the IT infrastructure necessary for commercial operations of the terminal. The Lithuanian company will also assist Uniper in the preparation of the commercial logistics operations, provide assistance regarding the operational rules, including the adaptation of the open access model, advise on the preparation of procedures for the reservation of capacity at the terminal, and provide other terminal operational services adapted to the customer’s needs.

KN CEO Darius Šilenskis notes that this agreement marks another important milestone in the context of the international LNG project development activities.

"The successful implementation of the LNG terminal project in Lithuania, the safe and reliable operation of the LNG terminal in the Brazilian port of Açu, as well as the contribution to several other LNG projects around the world, have allowed us to achieve a high international profile and to establish KN as a professional and reliable operator of LNG terminals and project developer on the LNG world map.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to share our unique competences and knowledge with Germany, which this year is rapidly embarking on the development of the construction of floating LNG terminals in order to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. We hope that the contract for the commercial management of the LNG terminal in Wilhemshaven will allow us to strengthen our position in the European LNG terminal market,’ says D. Šilenskis.

KN CEO points out that the company consistently maintains its strategic direction to be the first choice for customers who develop LNG terminals around the world.

‘The construction of the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven is an important contribution to secure the gas supply in Germany and Europe. With KN, we are now pleased to have an experienced partner on board with whom we can jointly curb Germany's independence from unilateral energy supplies,’ explains Dr. Christian Janzen, General Project Manager LNG Terminal Wilhelmshaven.

In an expanding LNG market, KN is constantly looking for new opportunities to engage in international LNG projects. To date, the company has been involved in the development of more than ten different LNG projects worldwide.
