LNG hits the railway

The Management Board of GAZ-SYSTEM has given recommendation to Polskie LNG, relating to commencement of design and preparatory works, that are going to contribute to handling of liquid natural gas, to be embarked on ISO cryogenic containers and railroad tank cars.

The decision on this particular issue was taken basing upon an output of the feasibility study, that had been commissioned by GAZ-SYSTEM in December 2017. The planned investment to be made within the premises of President Lech Kaczyński LNG Terminal in Świnoujście provides for a railway siding and the handling infrastructure for the liquid natural gas. – All these solutions will enable us to provide the embarkation and intermodal transport of considerable amounts of LNG. We will implement the “virtual gas pipeline” service. It is meant to deliver liquid natural gas from LNG Terminal to the regasification station as well as end users, through railway and road transportation – states Paweł Jakubowski, Head of Development Department, GAZ-SYSTEM.

The service of LNG handling to the railway is one of the new functionalities, that is connected with the project, aimed at extension of LNG Terminal in Świnoujście. The target is to reach the growth of regasification capacities of the terminal, from the current 5 billion m3 to 7.5 billion m3 of the natural gas annually. Therefore, existing SV regasificators are planned to be extended with subsequent units. Another functionality will be LNG embarking and bunkering of the vessels, that require construction of another quay. Recommendations referring to commencement of design and preparatory works tied with the abovementioned development operations, have been put forward by the Management Board of GAZ-SYSTEM to Polskie LNG this year.

The project of expansion of LNG Terminal in Świnoujście is an element of a complex development strategy implemented by GAZ-SYSTEM Capital Group. This investment will result in maximizing of available and anticipated infrastructure of the Terminal. Owing to that, the company will diversify the portfolio of services it provides and win over new business partners.
