The first delivery of LNG from the United States came to Lithuania

The first batch of American liquefied natural gas arrived at the port of Klaipeda, the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy announced.

The LNG vessel "Independence" operated by Klaipedos Nafta will start shipping to the Lithuanian natural gas system in the middle of the week after the liquefied natural gas is transferred. The part of the gas, "Lietuvos dujos tiekimas", is in the protection of Inčiukalnis natural gas storage and will be available to customers in Latvia.

According to Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, this cargo will further strengthen not only the energy independence of Lithuania but also of the entire region.

"Such events are worthy of a separate record on energy history pages. As the most important strategic partner of Lithuania, the US today becomes a reliable LNG supplier for the whole region. This strengthens not only partnership, energy independence, but also intensifies competition between gas suppliers, which guarantees even better gas prices to consumers in Lithuania and the entire region, "says Minister of Energy Ž. Vaičiūnas.

According to Finance Minister Vilius Šapokos, successful work has been achieved thanks to a consistent work and strategic approach.

"The first LNG cargo from the USA, which has reached Lithuania this year, is the result of the strategy of diversification of gas supply by the Lithuanian Energy Group. Successively optimizing the supply, Lietuvos energija has already succeeded in reducing the price of gas for the people of Lithuania, and this transaction will undoubtedly contribute to the creation of even more value for the country's economy, strengthen the strategic partnership and cooperation between the USA and Lithuania, "says Finance Minister V. Šapoka.

Director General of Lietuvos energija who purchased the cargo dr. Dalius Misiūnas says this is a sign that Lithuania and the Group of Lithuania Energy in the global LNG market are valued as a reliable partner and an attractive market.

"We have been monitoring the situation with a high US LNG potential since 2014. We are glad that one of the first US LNG cargoes in Eastern and Central Europe has arrived in Lithuania. This recognition helps us to diversify supply and offer the best prices to our customers in Lithuania and other Baltic countries, "says Dr. D. Misiūnas, General Director of Lietuvos energija.

The president and general manager of Cheniere Energy, Jack Fusco, predicts that the first arrival of gas from the United States to Lithuania could be the launch of mutually beneficial cooperation.

"We are pleased to ship the first US LNG cargo to Lithuania, which ensures reliable, competitive and flexible supply of natural gas from the United States. "Lietuvos dujų tiekimas" was a great partner in achieving this goal, so we want to continue to cooperate and bring benefits to our customers, "says Jack Fusco, President and CEO of Cheniere Energy.
Mindaugas Jusius, General Manager of AB Klaipėdos Nafta, says that the irreversible changes in the LNG market occurred faster than expected.

"If, for six, five or two years ago, we thought that in the near future the US could become an exporter of LNG, which could also be supplied to Lithuania, thereby helping to ensure Lithuania's energy security and competitive prices for the Lithuanian gas market, today we can state the fact that the companies Thanks to Cheniere, the global LNG market has changed irreversibly. Similarly, the Klaipėda LNG terminal has irreversibly changed the Baltic natural gas market: energy independence has been created, an open Baltic gas market has been opened, and an alternative source of energy source has been secured at competitive market prices, "said M. Jusius, General Manager of AB Klaipėdos Nafta.
